Authentic Historic Map

The background of this artwork features Plate V. The Reduced Map or Index to the County of York, engraved by the renowned British cartographer John Cary and published on 11 June 1794 as part of his celebrated atlas, Cary's New Map of England and Wales, with Part of Scotland.

John Cary (c.1754–1835) became one of Britain's most respected mapmakers thanks to the exceptional accuracy of his county maps. His work represented a major advancement in British cartography during the late eighteenth century, with detailed surveys providing far greater precision than many earlier maps. Cary's atlases were widely used by travellers, merchants, landowners and government officials throughout Britain.

Unlike the larger county sheets found elsewhere in the atlas, this particular map served as the master index to the County of York, providing a complete overview of Yorkshire whilst referencing the larger engraved map sheets covering the county in greater detail. The map carefully illustrates Yorkshire's historic boundaries, principal towns, villages, rivers, roads and neighbouring counties, all engraved with the remarkable craftsmanship that made Cary's work famous.

Today, these beautifully detailed engravings are celebrated not only as important historical documents but also as outstanding examples of eighteenth-century artistic craftsmanship. This artwork preserves that heritage whilst pairing it with bold modern typography to create a unique celebration of Yorkshire.
