The background of this artwork features an authentic public domain map taken from John Cary's Cary's New Map of England and Wales, first published in 1794.

John Cary (c.1755–1835) was one of Britain's most celebrated cartographers and engravers, renowned for producing some of the most accurate county maps of the late eighteenth century. His maps were trusted by travellers, merchants, landowners and government officials alike and represented a major advancement in British cartography.

Unlike many earlier county maps, Cary's work was based upon increasingly accurate surveys and carefully engraved to show an exceptional level of detail. Roads, villages, market towns, rivers, coastlines, hills and parish boundaries were all meticulously recorded, making his atlas one of the finest representations of Britain during the Georgian period.

The original Yorkshire map was engraved across numerous atlas sheets, allowing an extraordinary amount of detail to be captured. This artwork brings those historic sheets together as a single collage, preserving the intricate beauty of the original engraving while combining it with bold modern typography to create a unique celebration of Yorkshire.
