The background of this artwork features an authentic public domain map of Cornwall created by the renowned English cartographer John Speed and first published in 1614 as part of his landmark atlas, The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine. The map, titled "Cornwall Described and Divided with the Armes of such Nobles as have bene Earles thereof," is regarded as one of the finest and most decorative county maps ever produced in Britain.

John Speed (1552–1629) is widely recognised as one of England's greatest cartographers. His atlas transformed British mapmaking by combining accurate geographical information with elaborate artistic decoration, helping to define how the counties of Britain were represented during the early seventeenth century. Working alongside the master engraver Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam, Speed created maps that were admired as much for their beauty as for their accuracy.

Unlike many county maps of the period, this remarkable map contains far more than geographical information. It includes a panoramic view of Launceston, Cornwall's historic county town, decorative royal heraldry, sailing ships navigating the surrounding seas, a compass rose, coats of arms of the Earls of Cornwall and illustrations celebrating the county's rich history and maritime heritage.
